Actually, it could almost be New York versus the UK, and on NY turf. The UK punk band, the Damned’s first US show was at CBGBs. This was a pretty big deal at the time. There really weren’t that many UK punk bands that had played here.
So, the Damned were coming to town, and the warm up band was a group of Cleveland guys who had moved to NY called the Dead Boys. While the Damned were a really good band, they couldn’t hold a candle to the raw power and fun of the Dead Boys. Not only was the music incredible, but their lead singer was the guy who was rumoured to have given Iggy the jar of peanut butter at the Midsummer Rock concert (that’s another story I’ll tell some other time).
Stiv was a pretty slight guy, and pretty quiet offstage. Usually pretty polite also. But onstage, he was twisted and contorted, writhing around, and doing whatever he thought would entertain and shock the crowd.
Chuck Berry had his famous duck walk which countless rock guys used to imitate. If any of you rockers out there ever thought about picking up drumsticks with your rectum onstage, you owe Stiv Bators for that little trick. It was his own brand of ‘duck walk.’
