For anyone who ever visited the Venus Records store on Halloween (and usually the week before), you may remember that every year we had a Death Sale.
When I first opened the store, most of my favorite rock people were still alive. There really weren’t too many that had died… OK, Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Brian Jones, Buddie Holly and Eddie Cochran were gone, but that was only a few. A few weeks after opening the retail store, Halloween was coming up, and I wanted to celebrate.
My first idea was to have a spook sale – which would have been all black artists. While I didn’t mean anything racial by it, I decided it may be a bit over the top, and I’d probably have gotten bricks thru the window (or worse).
So, I came up with the ‘Death Sale.’ A discount on any artist that was dead, but the customer had to tell us about the dead person when buying. It was a lot of fun, and we held it every year the store was open.
At this point, too many of the rock people I actually knew have died, and I don’t think I could hold another death sale without going into a major depression. I’ll talk about those people in upcoming posts. Just some of the main people I miss are 3 Ramones, Stiv Bators, Greg Shaw, Nico, Robert Quinne, and Nikki Sudden. Unfortunately, there were too many others.
Rest in peace.
