For years now, I’ve noticed a phenomenon that I just don’t get. As people get older, they lose the part of their brain that knows good music from bad. They tend to stop rocking, and start trying to become respectable, just like their parents. Yeah, the ones they spent so many years rebelling against.
Rock music is what just about everyone has grown up with for the last 40 years or so. When people are teenagers, just about everyone listens to it. Fast and loud.
So what the *&(^# happens when they turn around 30? Why, all of a sudden do all these people who used to listen to rock and roll start listening to crap like Kenny G? How do all these American Idols exist? I just don’t get it.
Since you are looking at my blog, you probably are either still young, or still like to rock. But, if you are over 30, have kids, and look at the people around you, don’t you ever wonder what is wrong with these people?
I’ll admit that even when I was a teenager, there were a few people who listened to showtunes and classical. But they were by far the minority. I look around at these middle aged ‘respectable’ people, and I know that 20 years ago they were drunken, stoned, rock and roll listening idiots. OK, I can see getting over substance abuse, but how can they listen to the same dribble that their parents would have enjoyed listening to in the dentist office when they were kids?
Alright, enough ranting for today. Maybe another day, I’ll rant a bit about how disturbing it is that music is just fashion for most people, or how about how wrong it is that all these songs noone would listen to when they came out 20 years ago are now the ‘big thing’ in commercials. Back in 1976, even most metal guys hated the Ramones. Now they are everywhere and those same people are saying, yeah, I remember listening to them when they came out. Bull! Most of you didn’t listen to them, and if they hadn’t been on commercials, you still wouldn’t know who they are.
Guess I hadn’t finished ranting.
